Being a parent these days is not an easy thing. Which is why a lot of people just don’t have the energy to be eco-friendly. So, if you do commit – you’re a true hero and a real climateninja for sure! Here are a few tips and tricks to get you started.
How to make the change
Go for cloth diapers. It requires more work but once you get the hang of it some parents swear by them. Buy baby clothes, toys and other baby items second hand. Since they grow out them so fast there are usually plenty around. Ask friends and relatives if they have anything laying around. Or buy new ones made of eco-friendly materials. Try to make baby food by yourself instead of buying pre-made. Or buy organic ones.
Why make the change?
Reports say that about 20 million disosable diapers are dumped in landfills each year, making them one of the most common items found in landfills. It takes about 500 years for them to decompose, and they can contaminate ground water in the process. Adding to that, it takes 3.4 billion gallons of fuel oil every year to make diapers. Compared to cloth diapers, disposable ones use 20 times more raw materials, two times more water and three times more energy to make.
Be a climate ninja
Don’t make any babies at all. This planet is starting to get overcrowded. Find a hobby to put your love and energy into instead, like saving the planet. Or knitting. Or yeah…. what ever you enjoy. But hey, if you would really love to have children of course you should! But if you’re one of those that aren’t really sure, maybe the environment is another reason not to?
