Dishes. A chore we all have to endure after enjoying a delicious meal that uses a whole lot of water, chemicals and plastic. But, there are a few tweaks you can make to keep the planet as clean as your plates.
How to make the change
If you have a dishwasher, always fill it up before running it. Use a ecological detergent, with as little plastic packaging as possible, or even in bulk. You can even make your own dishwasher detergent based on lemon and vinegar. Similarly for hand washing, choose a eco soap, like liquid castile soap. And if you fill the sink with water instead of continuously running the tap, you’ll save some water. Swap your plastic brush for a compostable wooden one with a replaceable head.
Why make the change?
Swapping your dish brush for a compostable one is an easy tweak that cuts down your contribution to the plastic mountain in landfills. Using an eco-friendly detergent means you and the planet won’t be exposed to chemicals such as ammonia, chlorine bleach, formaldehyde and phosphates.
Be a climate ninja
Move out to a tribe somewhere in the forest and live off what the land and animals give you. Eat food with your bare hands, while sitting on the ground. Voila! No dishwashing needed! Or if you still like your house you can always try to eat communally, like in much of Africa and the Middle East. All you need is bowls of food in the middle of the table and your hands (which means a lot less dishes to clean).
